Phobia Hypnotherapy in Solihull: Your Brain Protecting You
Solution-focused hypnotherapy works with the amygdala (the brain’s threat-detector ) to update outdated fear patterns. Asha Berzon, CNHC-registered hypnotherapist in Solihull, uses a structured 4-session protocol for simple, specific phobias (providing there is nothing else creating overwhelm, phobai work can be done safely in 4 sessions).

A phobia isn’t a weakness and it isn’t “silly,” whatever your inner critic says.
It’s your amygdala doing the job it was built for, flagging something as dangerous when it isn’t. For simple, specific phobias, Asha has trained in a structured 4-session protocol.
For anything more layered, the shape of the work gets decided together, on your free Clarity Call, before you commit to anything.
What is a phobia?
A phobia is a much bigger fear reaction than the situation calls for, aimed at something that isn’t actually dangerous. A fear is different — that’s your brain correctly spotting real danger. The NHS says phobias are a type of anxiety disorder, and that they respond well to the right treatment. Here’s the science bit, kept short: when a phobia forms, your brain stores that fear as a kind of memory, in the part of the brain called the amygdala. Research published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry backs this up. Once you understand it’s a wiring problem, not a character flaw, a lot of the shame around it starts to lift — often the first useful thing that happens.
Common phobias I work with:
Fear of flying: This is dependent on the person, sometimes it can be a flying experience but usually not really about the plane. Stress from somewhere else in your life often attaches itself to a flight, especially one with a rough bit of turbulence.
Fear of needles: A common, single-cause phobia usually a good fit for the 4-session plan.
Fear of spiders: Often learned from watching someone else’s fear, rather than from your own bad experience.
Fear of heights: Can come from something you witnessed or something that happened to you. How long it takes depends on whether it’s on its own or tangled up with wider anxiety.
Fear of blood: Comes with a physical reaction too (fainting), so needs a slightly different approach, worth talking through on the Clarity Call.
Fear of moths and fear of snakes: Usually single-cause phobias, and good candidates for the 4-session plan.
Why some phobias clear up fast, and some take longer
It depends on what else was going on when the phobia started, not just what set it off. One that forms suddenly around a single clear event tends to respond quickly to the standard protocol. One tangled up with stress that was already there before the trigger, or one that’s simply always been present with no clear cause, usually needs the underlying anxiety addressed first. For a full walkthrough of exactly how this plays out with fear of flying, including a real client example, see Fear of Flying Hypnotherapy: A Step-by-Step Plan.

(Every case is different — these are patterns seen often in clinic, not a promise about how long any individual phobia will take.)
What actually happens in a session
Once you’re settled enough, and only if you feel ready, phobia work may use a visualisation technique that recasts the feared moment from a safe distance, then rebuilds a calm version of the experience in its place.
For a small number of clients, particularly where a phobia sits alongside earlier trauma rather than everyday stress, this is combined with EMDR through a GHR-accredited course. Neither is part of the standard 4-session plan, and neither is right for everyone what’s used depends on what surfaces on the Clarity Call.
Read the full walkthrough for flying specifically in Fear of Flying Hypnotherapy: A Step-by-Step Plan. If a fear turns out to be part of a wider anxiety pattern rather than one clear trigger, that’s usually its own piece of work learn more on the Anxiety page.
Then comes the reframe: a calm, ordinary version of the same journey leaving the house, getting to the airport, being on the flight itself (just a way of getting from A to B, like a car or a bus), landing, and getting home.
Being close to Birmingham Airport, fear of flying makes up a big part of the phobia work in clinic, and this is the technique behind most of it. It only comes in once the underlying anxiety has settled down, going straight to this step while someone’s still anxious generally is why other approaches don’t stick.
Working as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2018, helping clients with fear and phobias using a structured approach based on how the brain actually stores fear, not generic relaxation scripts.
What happens on your free Clarity Call
This is a proper first conversation and not just a box to tick before booking. It covers how your phobia started, and whether you’re likely a simple 4-session case, or need the longer route that starts with general anxiety work first. If hypnotherapy isn’t the right fit, that gets said plainly.

Frequently Asked Questions.
What's the difference between a fear and a phobia?
There is a real difference, and it matters for how treatment works. A fear is your brain correctly spotting genuine danger and prompting you to act, this could be heights, deep water, a car swerving towards you.
A phobia goes further: the same alarm system firing at something that isn’t actually a threat, often with avoidance that starts shrinking your life around it. In clinic, this shapes the plan a phobia isn’t about talking yourself out of it, it’s the structured, brain-based work covered above. If what you’re describing sounds more like general worry than one clear trigger, that’s a different piece of work, worth talking through on the Clarity Call.
Will I have to think about or confront the thing I'm afraid of?
Yes, eventually but not on day one, and not before being ready. Sessions build up slowly: first understanding how the fear started, then calming the body’s general stress response, only then moving toward the specific trigger, usually through visualisation and paced work in the session, not a real-life test.
A particularly reactive nervous system might mean a session or two of general calming work first. This is a two-way process, not a passive-patient one, each step is planned together. By the time the trigger’s addressed directly, the brain’s already primed to respond differently.
My phobia came out of nowhere — is that normal?
Yes, and it’s more common than you think. Phobias don’t always have an obvious origin. Sometimes they appear suddenly, triggered by a period of high stress or anxiety when the brain is in a heightened state of alert. The good news is that how a phobia started has very little bearing on how quickly it can be resolved. In these instances, starting the process with hypnotherapy can help reduce the fear repsonse or remove it all together.
How many sessions will I need for phobia hypnotherapy?
It depends how the phobia started. For a simple, single phobia such as flying, needles, spiders, the trained protocol is 4 sessions, based on how fear gets stored and updated in the brain, backed by peer-reviewed research in Molecular Psychiatry.
It gets more complicated when the phobia didn’t form in isolation say a stressful few months at work, then a flight with rough turbulence, landing on a nervous system already worn down. Tackling the fear head-on without addressing that first usually doesn’t work; the underlying stress gets addressed first, then the phobia work, often still resolved within a few weeks.
That’s what the free Clarity Call is for.
Do you see clients from Shirley or Wythall for phobia hypnotherapy?
Yes, I’m based at Tri Wellness in Earlswood, Solihull, an easy trip from Shirley, Wythall, Dorridge, Knowle and the wider South Birmingham area. If getting to clinic is difficult, online sessions work well for most phobia work, though a small number of cases suit in-person better but that gets said plainly on the Clarity Call, not after booking. Where you live matters less than fit: the standard protocol, or the longer route. The free Clarity Call is the right first step either way.
